Capturing Circus Magic: A Tale of Two Shoots with Nicole Fedoruk
Working with Nicole Fedoruk, a skilled aerialist, was like stepping into a world of wonder and creativity. Nicole's talent in aerial arts made our two photoshoots an exhilarating adventure.
Indoor Magic at the Underground Circus: Nicole's artistry shone under theatrical lighting. Her seamless transitions between different apparatuses and outfits turned our photoshoot into a masterclass of light and shadow.
The outdoor portion of our collaboration took place at Trout Lake Park. We were treated to a sunset spectacle with Nicole performing on a swinging lyra beneath a picturesque willow tree, blending her movements with the swaying branches and golden hues.

Working with Nicole Fedoruk, a circus instructor, aerialist, and RMT, was an adventure in creativity and adaptability. I had the opportunity to photograph her in two distinct settings, each offering unique challenges and rewards.
Indoor Shoot at Underground Circus
Our first set was indoors at the Underground Circus, a space perfectly suited for a formal and controlled environment. The two-hour shoot involved two different apparatuses under stage lighting, creating a dramatic and polished atmosphere. Nicole had three outfit changes, each adding a new dimension to the visuals.
One of the highlights was experimenting with light crystals and refraction. As a photographer, adapting to the sculptures and seeing them for the first time was a thrilling experience. Nicole maneuvered expertly around these art pieces, and the interplay of light and shadows brought her performance to life, capturing her grace and strength in every frame.
Outdoor Shoot at Trout Lake Park
The second set was at Trout Lake Park during sunset, a stark contrast to the controlled indoor environment. Safety was paramount, so finding the perfect tree to support Nicole's dynamic movements on the swinging lyra was crucial. We settled on a sturdy willow tree by the lake, but the setup was complicated by the fact that the ideal spot for lighting was over a popular dog pooping ground :P
Despite this, the shoot was magical. An assistant helped with two flashes on height extensions, illuminating the whimsical setting. The fantasy-themed shoot perfectly captured a dreamlike vibe, with Nicole's movement blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the sunset and lake.
These two shoots exemplify the diverse environments and creative processes involved in photographing a versatile performer like Nicole. Each setting brought out different aspects of her talent, making the experience both challenging and immensely rewarding.
